General Fund Donations

The bulk of the support provided by the Foundation is given from its general fund. This fund is the “foundation of the Foundation,” built on donations of cash, boats, and saleable nautical gear. Without the support our donors provide to keep this fund alive and healthy, the Foundation cannot do what it exists to do.

CASH DONATIONS made directly to the Foundation throughout the year go to the general fund. These donations are best made by check payable to Richmond Yacht Club Foundation, mailed to 351 Brickyard Cove Road, Point Richmond, CA 94801. (We’re working to make digital donations possible in the near future.)

DONATED BOATS generate a substantial part of the money flowing into the general fund. To make a gift of a boat, contact one of the Board members whose name and phone number appears on the Boats For Sale page. If your boat meets certain criteria regarding structural soundness, equipment, marketability and title, you will be guided through the donation process and will receive the documents needed to support your charitable deduction when the boat is sold.

DONATIONS OF SALEABLE NAUTICAL GEAR will be sold at our annual Gear Sale. To donate such items, please contact a member of our Board to set up a time for us to receive the gear at Richmond Yacht Club.

At this time, we are no longer accepting donations of vehicles.

Special Account Donations

In addition to its general fund, the Foundation has also established a few special accounts for programs, campaigns and projects. Each special account has been created in response to a specific application after the Board has determined that the account is consistent with the Foundation’s charitable purposes. These accounts assist the holder in fundraising since donations to the account are tax deductible. The account holder can then draw on the account for reimbursement of qualifying expenses, which have certain restrictions in order to preserve the tax deductible status of the donations. The accounts that are currently active are described below. If you would like more information concerning a particular account, contact Tim Knowles, RYC Foundation President.

To earmark a donation for an account listed, your check payable to the Richmond Yacht Club Foundation should include the phrase “FBO” along with the specific account name in the Memo line ( e.g. “FBO RYC J22 Program” ).

  • The Liebenberg – Newberry Olympic Campaign account: This account helps support David Liebenberg and Sarah Newberry in their quest to represent the United States at the 2024 Olympics in the very demanding foiling Nacra 17 catamaran class. Having very narrowly missed qualifying for the upcoming Olympics in Japan, David and Sarah want to continue their already extensive training with iintense focus on becoming the team representing the US in this class at the games in Paris, view their website here.
  • Pierce Program: This program, created and administered by RYC member and former Junior Program Instructor Merrill Pierce, introduces Richmond elementary school youngsters to the joys of saililng small boats.
  • STEMsail Program: Organized by RYC member Wayne Koide, this outdoor educational program focuses on young people and uses the concepts of sailing to teach not only the elements of the sport, but also principles of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (hence “STEM”) with an emphasis on ocean literacy and environmental awareness. • J22 Program: Using the J22s owned by the Foundation and loaned to RYC, this program provides young sailors who have previously concentrated on skiff and dinghy sailing with the platform to obtain and hone the specific sailing skills for various forms of racing (e.g., match, team and fleet) that will enable them to be successful in these highly competitive small keelboat events. It also teaches the logistics of preparing for competition and how to maintain the boats.
  • Nash Film Project: A film is being made about the life of renowned sailor Jocelyn Nash. Her achievements in the sport of sailing are significant and inspirational to all sailors, particularly to young women sailors. This remarkable story needs to be preserved. Directed by acclaimed documentary filmmaker Oleg Harencar, “Sailing Set Her Free" will continue to educate and inspire generations of sailors to come. Much work has already been done, see film preview here. This account is ready to receive donations to help see that the project is completed.
  • Sail Training Center at Richmond Yacht Club: This account exists to receive tax deductible donations that will help construct a dedicated Sail Training Center at Richmond Yacht Club to improve the facilities and future sail training programs there, with emphasis on Juniors and Youths. The huge benefit to sailing in general and to youth sailing in particular to be derived from the realization of such a Center is self-evident.
